For years, the handloom weavers of Bhaironpur turned down large orders because no single family could finish them in time. This festive season, they said yes to almost everything.

The change is a common workshop that opened in April, with 40 improved looms, a small dye unit that recycles water, and a design studio where young weavers learn to turn traditional motifs into cushion covers, stoles and table runners. It is run by a cooperative of 220 weaver families.

"Earlier, a buyer wanting 2,000 stoles would go to a factory," said Shabnam Ansari, the cooperative's secretary. "Now we split the order across families, finish it in the workshop, and ship it together with one quality check."

The cooperative now sells through two online marketplaces and a stall at the state crafts fair. Its members say the biggest change is in who weaves: more young people, including many women, now see a future in the craft.

The cooperative wants to add a solar dryer for dyed yarn before the winter, and to train ten members in photographing products for online listings.
